Art in the Fold

ACCI Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition spanning the breadth of folded artistry, from fabric pleating to the fold-forming of metal, paper origami, two-dimensional representations of the fold, and more. As opposed to an additive or subtractive process, folding material into a sculpture is a transformation, adding nothing and leaving out nothing, "just" rearranging the shape. However, as seen in pleated fabrics or modern origami, the rearranging of the shape can be quite complicated and result in almost arbitrary two- and three-dimensional forms and patterns.

Folding is all around us in the natural world, its scale and materials ranging from insect wings to geological formations. Likewise, in arts and crafts, many sheet media are folded or shaped by folding, including paper, plastic, cloth, metal sheet, woven metal mesh. The process by which folding is done can range from simple creasing of paper to hammer-assisted foldforming of thick metal sheets. Surfaces shaped by folds may be dyed, painted, marked or textured before or after folding. This exhibition showcases the unmeasured ingenuity of work by artists and craftspeople who rely on or use folding in shaping the work itself or its support, or through the representation of folding or folded objects.
