On the Waterfront: The Other Side of Berkeley is on view at the Berkeley Historical Society & Museum through September 26, 2026. The exhibit tells the story of the shoreline area from its earliest, prehistoric times to the present day. While the waterfront itself has been constantly changing, the way it has been used has also shifted, from an emphasis on extraction and exploitation to a focus on preservation and recreation. The exhibit starts with a sequence of aerial photos of the shoreline today, accompanied by a set of maps and historic photos that show how the waterfront has changed since the 1850s. This is followed by sections that show how the waterfront’s ecology has changed over time, how the Ohlone and Spanish and Mexicans lived by the waterfront, how the waterfront was used for transportation and industry, and how the waterfront was (and is) used for recreation.
Visitors will learn the background behind many of the issues currently being discussed, including a proposed Berkeley ferry and a possible future park at the Golden Gate Fields site.
Hours: Thursday through Saturday, 1 to 4 pm
